Two screens decided who made the roster. The place had to be in our coverage file, and a second, independent mileage figure from the Melville ZIP code had to fall within about fifteen miles.
One detail belongs at the top. Melville has two ZIP codes in the coverage file, 11747 and 11760. The second has a blank city column and was matched by its distance from the first. Neither appears in the table below, which lists only the surrounding places.
Villages, hamlets and counted places.
Long Island is cut into towns, each holding villages that are legally incorporated and hamlets that are not. Villages on this list include Northport, Farmingdale, Lindenhurst, Amityville, Bayville, Islandia, Roslyn, Mineola, Williston Park, Garden City, Sea Cliff, Freeport, Old Westbury and the Village of Hempstead. Nearly every other entry is a hamlet with no municipal government, which changes nothing about how we trap rodents or seal a house.
Suffolk County provides the Huntington, Smithtown, Islip and Babylon sides of the list, and Nassau County the Oyster Bay, Hempstead and North Hempstead sides. A mailing address can name a village even when the lot is in a hamlet, so ZIP code is our test.
Where the data is thin.
Some rows in the coverage file have no city name. That applies to a second Hicksville code, one Great Neck code, four Port Washington codes and a few others, and the individual pages say so. For those, a street address is the final check.
